Hot luggage startup Away recently opened a pop-up store called Origin:Away in Sydney’s hip Paddington district. We stopped by to listen to modern artist Nick Thomm talk about his work. Along the way we got some great coffee and checked out Away’s new suitcases.
Here’s the whole experience summed up in pictures:
As soon as you enter the pop-up, you see Nick’s work on display. It seems to all be limited edition. From skateboards to hoodies, he’s made it all, although most of his work is prints and paintings.
Away invited other Australian creatives to create displays, and their work is shown after Nick’s.
I didn’t get to play pool since I am currently on crutches.
As any self-respecting pop-up would do, Away ensured you can buy their products here. I like their carry on bags, although I didn’t buy any.
More artwork from creatives like Dion Lee, Atelier Romy, and Afluerette.
The backdrop of some of the presentations.
The interview couch–just before things got going.
Nick Thomm is on–here he is talking about the time Miley Cyrus had him fly out to LA to design a wall on her new house in Malibu. Sounds like fun!
He also expanded on how Tumblr helped launch his career, why he left New York for LA (“NY is so hectic”) and what he misses most about Australia when he is away (sausage rolls).
Of course other stars were present too…
Like this dog who was super adorable and kept exploring that bench.
I especially appreciated meeting Nick since I just ordered a print of his–here is the “Veins” XL print on my ping pong table.
And with that we were off. It was cool to check out this pop-up and hear from Nick. I got to talk to him briefly after the show. We geeked out on the best methods to frame and preserve art.
Definitely a cool event–Thanks Away and Nick Thomm for stopping by Sydney! For more on travel, check out our Vivid Sydney guide and Seoul’s 12 must-visit destinations. For more with Australian creatives, check out our interview with musician Jason Lowe.
